Pulmonary Tests Flashcards
1
Q
pulmonary function tests
A
- maximal effort flow volume loop
- peak expiratory flow
- forced vital capacity
- indicates pulmonary compliance
2
Q
maximal expiratory flow volume curves
A
- maximal flow that can be attained at each lung volume
- greater at greater lung volume because airways are distended and resistance is lower
- no balloon-used for obstructive and restrictive disease
- effort independent
- recorded with spirometer that measures flow and volume during a breathing cycle
- can be constructed from IVPF curves by taking points from plateau
- if lung elastic recoil pressure is abnormally low, maximal expiratory flow rate is low
3
Q
flow volume loop
A
flow and volume recorded simultaneously with spirometer during forceful rapid expiration after maximal inspiration
- normal vital capacity around 4.75 L
- peak expiratory flow at 75% VC, and 100% VC exhaled over 1 sec
4
Q
FVC
A
forced vital capacity
-4.75
5
Q
FEV.5
A
forced expired volume in 05 sec
6
Q
FEV1
A
forced expired volume in 1 sec
should be 100 %
7
Q
FEV 3
A
3 sec
8
Q
PEF
A
peak expiratory flow
-75% VC
9
Q
FEF 25-75
A
-forced expired flow between 25-75% of the expired volume
10
Q
FEF 50
A
-forced expired flow at 50% of expired volume
11
Q
MEFV loops in obstructive and restrictive lung disease
A
- bigger in obstructive
- smaller in restrictive
- emphysema curves down
