Skeletal Thorax (functions)

A

AKA: Rib Cage

  • Thoracic Vertebrae
  • Ribs
  • Sternum
    • Houses visceral organs
    • Protects and supports respiratory function
    • Provides attachments for numerous muscles

Q

What is surfactant?

A
  • Excretion released by alveolar cells
  • Lowers surface tension of the alveoli
  • Prevents alveolar collapse

Q

What are different types of pleura, pleural linkage, and intrapleural pressure?

A

Responsible for connecting lungs to thorax, and allowing movement without puncturing.

  • Visceral Pleura
    • Covers the lungs
  • Parietal Pleura
    • Covering inside of the thorax

Pleural Linkage: thin layer of fluid creates BONDS, which leads to NEGATIVE intrapleural pressure
