Pulmonary risk indices Flashcards
1
Q
Pulmonary risk indices
A
• two important proposed pulmonary risk indices include the Arozullah and Canet indices. they provide a simplified approach to preoperative pulmonary risk estimation and are useful tools to stratify risk and to identify those patients most likely to benefit from risk reduction strategies.

Q
Arozullah riskindex
A
- Used to predict post-operative respiratory failure.
- Points are assigned to factors that predict post-operative respiratory failure, such as type of surgery, emergency surgery, COPD, albumin <30g/dL, blood urea nitrogen (BUn) >30mg/dL, dependent functional status, and advanced age (60–69yr and >70yr).
- Procedure-related risk factors dominate the index, with type of surgery and emergency surgery being the most important predictors.

Q
Canet riskindex
A
- Risk index to predict post-operative pulmonary complications.
- Seven risk factors are used to stratify risk into low, intermediate, and high risk for post-operative pulmonary complications.
- Risk factors include advanced age, low preoperative O2 saturation, respiratory infection within the past month, preoperative anaemia, upper abdominal or thoracic surgery, surgery lasting >2hr, and emergency surgery.
