PULMONARY Degenerative Flashcards
Chronic Bronchitis
A long-term inflammation of the bronchi. It is common among smokers. People with chronic bronchitis tend to get lung infections more easily. They also have episodes of acute bronchitis, when symptoms are worse.
SYMPTOMS:
Cough, often called smoker’s cough. Coughing up mucus (expectoration) Wheezing.
Other symptoms may include:
Bluish fingernails, lips, and skin because of lower oxygen levels.
Wheezing and crackling sounds with breathing.
Swollen feet.
Heart failure.
CAUSE: The most important cause of chronic bronchitis is cigarette smoking. Air pollution and your work environment may also play a role. This condition causes a cough that’s often called smoker’s cough.
Emphysema
A lung condition that causes shortness of breath. In people with emphysema, the air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) are damaged. Over time, the inner walls of the air sacs weaken and rupture — creating larger air spaces instead of many small ones.
SYMPTOMS: Frequent coughing or wheezing.
A cough that produces a lot mucus.
Shortness of breath, especially with physical activity.
A whistling or squeaky sound when you breathe.
Tightness in your chest.
CAUSE: The main cause of emphysema is long-term exposure to airborne irritants, including: Tobacco smoke. Marijuana smoke. Air pollution.
