Pulleys Flashcards
How does increasing the number of pulley ropes affect the effort force?
The effort force decreases as ropes increase
Is there a relationship between the number of ropes and the ratio
Yes , number of ropes = the ratio e.g. 2 ropes means ratio is 1:2
What happens to the distance moved up by the load compared to the amount of rope pulled by the effort force as the number of pulleys increases
The effort has to move much farther to lift the load the same distance.
As more pulleys and rope is introduced to the system what other force starts to have a larger impact on the efficiency of the system
Friction starts to affect the efficiency and reduce it.
What is a pulley system
A force multiplier by increasing the number of ropes which support the load.
Explain the tensions and efforts
There are 3 parallel pieces of rope which support the load, therefore they each hold up one third of the weight. 1/3 of 1200N is 400N. This is the effort a person pulling the rope has to exert to hold up the 1200N weight, so their force is multiplied by 3.
If the load is 1200 newtons and there is one rope, what’s the force on the rope? And what’s the ratio?
The force is still 1200N . Ratio is 1:1
What can pulleys change
The direction of the force
How to find the effort, and what’s the effort in a pulley system
Load / number of ropes (effort is the person pulling)
What’s does friction affect , what form of friction is there in a pulley system, and what do we label it
Friction causes energy waste. Energy can be wasted in the form of heat. We call them tensions
