- early childhood caries (ECC)

- congenitally absent teeth
- thumb/finger sucking
- tongue thrust
- lip habits (biting or sucking lips or cheeks)
- mouth breathing
- unilateral mastication habits
what causes tooth loss?
dental conditions such as dental caries, periodontal disease, dental trauma or history of absence of dental treatment
what is OHRQOL?
oral health related quality of life - involves eating, speaking, smiling, sleeping, self-esteem and social relationships
what is edentulism?
total tooth loss
what is partial tooth loss?
average number of lost permanent teeth, have 20 or more natural teeth
what are the measurements of tooth loss?
0 = edentulous
10 or more = severe partial tooth loss
20 or more = partial tooth loss but functional
what does FDI indicate?
the world dental federation regards having 21 or more natural teeth as a functional dentition
what does GBD indicate?
global burden of disease regards having 9 or less remaining teeth as severe tooth loss
what are the risk factors involved in tooth loss?
proximal, intermediate and distal factors
