Public Health and Behavioural Science Flashcards
biomedical model
the body as a machine - does not take into account the patient and how they are feeling, social factors, behaviours etc
biopsychosocial model
intergrating disease factors and patient factors
epidemiology
study of frequency, distribution + determinants of disease in a population
epidemiological triangle
vector, food, environment
incidence
number of new cases of disease in a population/number of persons with risk of developing the disease in the same population
prevalence
number of cases of a disease present in a population/number of people with risk of having a disease in the same population
negative predictive value
proportion of those who test negative who actually do not have the disease
positive predictive value
proportion of those who test positive who actually have the disease
sensitivity
test true positives and is the proportion of those who are correctly identified by a +ve test
specificity
test true negative and is the proportion of those who do not have the disease who are correctly identified by a -ve test
tertiary prevention
stopping later complications from developing
yield
number of previously undiagnosed cases picked up by a screening programme
primary prevention
stopping a disease before it starts
health literacy
ability to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health
secondary prevention
stopping a disease from getting worse
