What are some physical changes that take place during puberty for boys? (7)
- Their shoulders widen .
- Their voices deepen.
- They begin to grow hair on their faces.
- Becomes more muscly.
- His Penis and grows larger and their testes get bigger.
- The boys’ testes (two egg shaped glands in the scrotum (the sac that hangs under the penis)) produce testosterone and sperm.
- Sperm is needed to father a baby.
What are 7 physical changes that take place during puberty for girls? (7)
- The ovaries in girls produce sex hormones called oestrogen and progesterone.
- Oestrogen causes the breasts to grow and the womb (uterus) and genitals to become larger.
- Progesterone builds the lining of the womb to receive a fertilized egg cell.
- Girls start to menstruate, which prepares their bodies to have babies.
- During the menstrual cycle, an egg is released from one of the ovaries and travels down the Fallopian tube to the uterus. Extra blood and tissue form in the uterus, in case the egg is fertilized by sperm.
- This protects and nourishes the growing baby. When the egg is not fertilized, the blood leaves the body through the vagina.
- Girls develop breasts, their hips get wider and their bodies get curvier.
What else happens to teenagers during puberty? (3)
- They get mood swings ( may be happy one moment and grumpy the next ).
- They are more sensitive when it comes to their emotions.
- They may become sexually attracted to a person.
Why does moodiness occur during puberty? (1)
Moodiness is due to changes in oestrogen and testosterone levels.
Why does confusion occur during puberty? (1)
Confusion about what is happening to you.
Why does concern occur during puberty? (2)
- Concern about whether the changes happening to you are normal.
- Concern about how others’ bodies look when compared to yours.

What physical changes do girls and boys both go through. (5)
- You grow taller and put on weight.
- You grow hair in your armpits and genital regions.
- Hormones affect glands in the skin, which may become oil and result in pimples and greasy hair.
- They also cause you to sweat.
- Your brain is also maturing but only becomes an adult brain at 25.
What is the definition of puberty?
Puberty is the stage when a child’s body develops into an adult’s body which takes place between the ages of 10 and 17 (for boys) and 8 and 16 (for girls).
How can moodiness cause conflict within a family?
Moodiness during puberty causes extreme mood changes that can be experienced without warning. This may cause the teenager to lose their temper more often as well as getting angry with family and friends for no reason.
What does sex mean? (2)
Sex refers to the biological characteristics of people which make them male or female.
What does gender mean? (2)
Gender refers to the characteristics that society expects people to have, depending on whether they are male or female. These are known as GENDER CONSTRUCTS!
What does ‘constructs’ mean? (2)
Constructs mean ‘ideas; theories developed by society’. Each society defines what behaviour and duties are appropriate for men and women.
What is the role of the PITUITARY GLAND? (2)
The Pituitary gland in the brain produces hormones, which are chemical substances.
