PTT Chap 8 Movement Glossary Flashcards
Agonist
the muscle which produces the movement in muscle interactions
Antagonist
the muscle which opposes or produces the opposite movement in muscle interactions
Synergist
muscle which acts to produce motion similar to or in concert with agonist muscles
Lateral Flexion
side-bending
Adduction
toward the midline
Abduction
away from the midline
Flexion
decreasing joint angle; forward bending from anatomical position
Extension
increasing joint angle; bending backward from anatomical position or a return from flexion
Medial / Internal Rotation
moving the front surface of the limb toward midline
Lateral / External Rotation
moving the front surface of the limb away from midline
Circumduction
Tri-planar movement of the hip and shoulder joint
Elevation
Moving superiorly, such as scapular elevation toward the head
Depression
Moving inferiorly, such as scapular depress toward the feet
Protraction / Abduction
Scapular movement away from the midline
Retraction / Adduction
Scapular movement toward the midline
Lateral Rotation of the Scapula
Inferior angle of the Scapula moves away from the midline
Medial rotation of the scapula
Inferior angle of the scapula moves toward the midline
Pronation (hand)
The palm faces posteriorly, with the thumb medial
Supination (hand)
The palm faces anteriorly with the thumb lateral
Inversion
A combined movement of Adduction, supination and plantar flexion of the foot
Eversion
A combined movement of abduction, pronation and dorsiflexion of the foot
Plantar flexion
Pointing the foot, bringing the bottom surface of the foot away from the shin
Dorsi flexion
Flexing the foot, bringing the top surface of the foot up towards the shin
Isometric
A muscular contractions in which the length of the muscle does not change
Isotonic
A muscular contractions in which the length of the muscle changes
Eccentric
A lengthening muscle contraction
