Setting - quiet + private - avoid interruptions Perception - what already know - perceptions about situation Information/Invitation - how much + what info helpful - preferred learning styles Knowledge - gentle, non clinical language - small segments - +ve info + basic info re Dx, Tx, prognosis Empathy: acknowledge emotions + reactions Summarise + Strategise - in language pt understand - provide strategic plan for intervention - ask pt to repeat + summarise
