1.25m or 4 ft
Line side is how far from the line?
3m or 10 ft
What are the distances from the line for a position of safety for different train speeds?
0-100mph: 1.25m (4ft)
101-125mph: 2m (6ft6)
How far from the line must lightweight tools and equipment be left, and at what speeds?

Know speed and direction of any approaching trains
Know of safety hazards
Walk in P.O.S and face traffic if possible
Take extra care in junction areas
When a train approaches, what must you do and in what time?

How should you cross the line with conductor rails?
Find a gap or p[lace where protective guarding is provided
Step over running rail and conductor rail together
When working in a group, what will a COSS do and wear?
They will wear a blue badge with white writing. They will set up a safe system of work to ensure no one is put in danger by trains or electrification equipment.
What safety arrangements will the COSS tell you about?
Name and location of work Access route and route to site Site limits and how they're defined Site lines, opened or blocked, speed limit, direction Best emergency communication means Site hazards Your protection from trains
What is a safe system?
A system set up to protect you from trains
What are the 8 safe system options?
- Safeguarded Site of work
- Fenced site of work
- Seperated site of work
- Permanent warning systems
- Train operated warning system (TOWS) warning system
- Human activated equipment warning system
- Portable warning system
- Lookout warning
What is a safeguarded site of work safe system?
Where all lines are blocked
What is a fenced site of work and what are the limits?
Fence erected between work site and nearest open line

BEYOND: On far side of signal when looking in normal traffic direction
APPROACH: On near side when looking in normal traffic direction
What are the rules regarding metal objects on rails?
You mustn’t place them across rails since they might operate signalling equipment and change signal aspect. Also, no metal object is allowed within 30cm of axle counter head since it could interfere with operation.
When can you use a vehicle on/near line?
If you are a driver and are the COSS/SWL/IWA or a COSS/SWL are present and have given permission.
What are the rules regarding driving a vehicle on or near the line?
