What constitutes a green walking route?
Safe walking route, no pts or high vis required
What constitutes a yellow walking route?
Hazardous walking route potentially near the line. PPE required (high vis and safety boots)
What constitutes a red walking route?
Dangerous walking route, very high risk area. PTS & full PPE required these walking routes will be associated with high levels of danger such as the maintenance sheds
What do we need when going on the line?
•Correct PPE (high vis, safety shoes etc)
•obey all warning signs and indicators
•look and listen for approaching trains
•raise 1 arm to acknowledge on coming trains
•speed of oncoming trains
•names of track and direction of travel
What makes up a rail track
•rail head
•ballast
•sleeper
•fishplate
•Pandrol clip
•chair or base plate
How are two running rails made up?
Cess, 4ft, 6ft, 4ft, cess
How are 4 running rails made up?
Cess, 4ft, 6ft, 4ft, 10ft, 4ft, 6ft,4ft, Cess
What is the 5 and 10 second rule?
•every 5 seconds look up for oncoming trains
•must be able to reach a point of safety within 10 seconds
How far away should equipment be placed away from the running line?
2 meters
When walking with another person on the line how far apart should you be?
20 meters
If you need to walk close to each other who will need to be present
A c.o.s.s, a M.o.m or S.w.L
How far should stabled train be apart for you to cross between them?
50ft or 15M
What does the term “eat dirt” mean?
You are between 2 running line and trains are approaching.
You must lie down in the 6ft immediately with all lose items underneath you
What are the different signage colours used and what do they mean?
• RED- you must not do this unless in an emergency
•Yellow- identifies a hazard
•Blue-mandatory instruction or information
What does the limited clearance sign mean? And what does it look like
No position of safety for the length of the structure
It’s depicted by a sign with 2 red and 2 white squares
What does the no refuge sign mean and what does it look like?
No refuge means no no position of safety on this side of the track however they may be positions of safety on the opposite track
