The job of a physical therapist in the schools is?
Assist the student in meeting their educational goals
Being able to access all areas of their environment
The timeline for PTs in the education starts in the 1930s and ended in the 1960/70s. Give the years and what happened.
1930: Special schools for crippled children
1940: Medical research papers written based on these ‘special schools’
1950: Decrease in these schools- there was a change in thought due to polio and civil rights
1960/70: Decrease in segregation of children with disabilities
The Rehab Act of 1973 did what?
Qualified a disabled individual as ‘Physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major activities in life’
Also said that no one could be denied access to an education that is funded by the government
What did the 1975- Education for all handicapped children act provide?
A free appropriate education for all children with disabilities ages 6- 21
A 1986 amendment changed what about the 975- Education for all handicapped children act?
Changed the age to add in birth -5 year olds.
Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 achieved what?
1) Extends comprehensive civil rights to those with disabilities
2) Applicable to day care centers, public transportation, and school
3) All public buildings had to be accessible.
in 2001 No Child Left Behind Act allowed for what change to children with disabilities?
1) All children with or without disabilities can receive quality education
2) PTs in school need to assure that each child is appropriately positioned, has best communication device in order to meet demands of this act
Today the IDEIA is used. What does that stand for and what does it provide for?
Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
Part A: General Provisions- Education should prepare children for indep. living
Part D: National Activities to Improve Education of Children with Disabilites
Part B: Asst. for all children with disabilities free appropriate education for 3-21 year old
Part C: Infants/Toddlers with Disabilities: Free and appropriate education for 0-2 year olds (Early on- MI and First Steps- IN) Mandates that states develop policies and procedures for children under 3 who have disabilities or have been abused/neglected OR affected by prenatal drug use.
What is natural environment?
Settings that are natural or typical for a same aged infant or toddler without a disability
Part C allows for disabled children to be taught in natural environment
Least restrictive environment means?
To max extent appropriate, children with disabilities are educated with non-diasbled kids
Removal only occurs if impairments are so severe that a normal classroom education would not be achieved satisfactorily.
What does zero reject mean?
All children will receive an education regardless of disability
