18
Q

What kinds of tracks are affected by the H/W Buffer Size setting in the Playback Engine dialog box?

A

Any track that is recording, hosting a virtual instrument or monitoring live
input. Typically, these track types are: Audio tracks, Aux Input Tracks, and/
or Instrument Tracks. Master Fader tracks and MIDI tracks do not effect the
low-latency H/W Buffer’s processing

Q

What shortcut operations are available for adding individual tracks to your
session?

A

a) CMD/CTRL+Double-Clicking = Audio Track
b) OPT/ALT+Double-Clicking = Instrument Track
c) CONTROL/START+Double-Clicking = Aux Input Track
d) SHIFT+Double-Clicking = Master Fader Track

20
Q

How many simultaneous mono/stereo audio tracks can be used

A

256

21
Q

How many possible channels

A

64 with HD Native, 192 with HDX

22
Q

What types of clips can be grouped together as a clip group? Can clips of different
types be combined into a single clip group?

A

Any audio, MIDI or Video clips can be grouped together to create a clip group.
Yes. Those types of groups are called Multitrack Clip Groups

23
Q

How many clips are required for a clip group? Can clip groups contain silence?

A

None. Clip groups can be comprised of only silence if the user so desires.

24
Q

What modifier key would you hold while clicking on a ruler to add a Meter or Tempo
change to your session?

A

Ctrl / Start

25
Q

What main menu would you use to access the Tempo Operations window? What is the
purpose of the Linear Page in the Tempo Operations Window?

A

The Event Menu

To create a gradual tempo increase/decrease within a specific time frame in your
session.

26
Q

What will happen to a MIDI clip during loop recording is the recording is interrupted before reaching the midpoint. What about Audio Clip?

A

MIDI - If a record pass is interrupted before reaching the clip’s midpoint, that take is
kept

Audio - If a record pass is interrupted before reaching the clip’s midpoint, that take is
discarded

27
Q

What timebase do Audio Tracks default to? MIDI tracks? Instrument Tracks?

A

Audio tracks default to sample timebase while MIDI and Instrument tracks default to tick timebase.

28
Q

Which Pro Tools timescales are absolute? Which are relative? What is the difference between absolute and relative timebases?

A

Sample timebase is absolute, and tick timebase is relative.
Clips, who are on a track with an absolute timescale setting, will maintain a
fixed (or absolute) position in the track’s timeline and will not react to
tempo event changes.
Clips, who are on a track with a relative timescale setting, will change
position in the track’s timeline whenever tempo event changes are made.

29
Q

Pro Tools provides 960 ticks per quarter note; how many ticks does it provide
per half note? How many per eighth note?

A

1920 per half note

480 per eighth note

30
Q

What are some of the different options available for viewing data on MIDI and Instrument tracks in the Edit window? What kinds of operations can you perform
in each view?

A

a. Notes View - Displays MIDI events as individual bits of data. This view
allows you to edit and add MIDI data using the Pencil Tool.
b. Clips View - Displays MIDI events as clips, or containers of MIDI data.
Notes cannot be edited in this view.
c. Velocity View - Displays velocity stalks for each MIDI note in the clip.
Stalks can be edited and added in this view.

31
Q

What is the Default MIDI Thru Instrument? How can you change the Default Thru Instrument Setting?

A

The Default MIDI Thru instrument is the device that Pro Tools uses to
audition MIDI clips and/or data in Pro Tools. It also allows you to audition
MIDI/INSTRUMENT tracks without needing to record-arm them.

32
Q

What keyboard modifier would you use when clicking on a MIDI clip in the Clip List
to audition it?

A

OPTION/ALT. The Default Audition Path in the I/O Setup must be defined in order
to audition audio/MIDI clips in the clips list.

33
Q

How is editing MIDI data different from editing audio? (Describe how MIDI
notes are affected when deleting a selection or trimming a clip versus how audio
waveforms are affected).

A

When a MIDI event’s start point is within an Edit selection, and then that
selection is cleared, that MIDI event will be removed, regardless if its end
point was within the Edit selection.
When a MIDI event’s end point is within an Edit selection, but not its start
point, and then that selection is cleared, the MIDI event will not be removed
and will overlap the clip’s boundary.
MIDI editing is considered destructive if the MIDI clip being edited occurs
only once in a session.
MIDI editing is considered non-destructive if the MIDI clip being edited
occurs in multiple locations within the session.

34
Q

What is the difference between Grid Quantizing and Groove Quantizing?

A

Grid Quantizing snaps notes/events to a tick-based grid; the current grid value of your session, to be exact. Groove Quantizing snaps notes to a
predefined groove template that can be loaded into a performance.

35
Q

What types of tracks are affected by Real-Time Properties?

A

MIDI tracks and Instrument Tracks.

36
Q

Where can you assign the color-coding that Pro Tools will automatically apply for tracks and clips? What color-coding option does Pro Tools use by default?

A

Setup > Preferences > Display
The default setting for Tracks is “Track Type”
The default setting for Clips is “Track Playlist / MIDI Channel

37
Q

What are the two ways that the Trim Tool can be used to edit a clip loop?

A

Moving the standard Trim Tool to the top half (or main part) of a clip loopwill allow you to edit the length of the entire clip loop.

Moving the standard Trim Tool to the bottom half of a clip loop (or in linewith the clip loop icon) you will be able to edit the contents of the clip loop
itself.

38
Q

What does the USE IN PLAYLIST button do in the AudioSuite plug-in window?
How can you tell if this option is active?

A

It replaces your currently selected clip with the rendered version of the clip once rendering has been completed.
The button is blue when active.

39
Q

How many inserts are available on a track in Pro Tools?

A

10

40
Q

How many Sends are available on a track in Pro Tools?

A

10

41
Q

Are inserts pre-fader or post fader on Audio tracks, Instrument Track and Aux
Input tracks? Are inserts different on Master Faders?

A

Inserts on Audio, Aux and Instrument tracks are Pre-Fader only.
Inserts on Master Faders are Post-Fader only

42
Q

Are sends pre-fader or post-fader on Audio tracks, Instrument Tracks and Aux
Input tracks? Are sends any different on Master Fader tracks? Explain.

A

Sends can be either pre or post fader on Audio, Instrument and Aux tracks.
Master Faders contain no sends because Master Faders are the end-destination
in a given signal path. Signal is sent to them, not from them.

43
Q

How many Bus sends are available on a track in Pro Tools?

A

256

44
Q

Which type of plug-in effects are generally used on inserts? Which are generally
used with sends?

A

Dynamic processors are usually used on inserts

Time-Based processors are usually used on sends

45
Q

What is the difference between the Write, Touch and Latch automation modes?

A

Write mode writes automation data to an automation playlist and overwrites
any previously exisiting automation data.
Touch mode writes automation data to an automation playlist but only begins
writing when a control is ‘touched.’ It ends writing whenever that control
is released. DATA IS ONLY OVERWRITTEN IF A CONTROL IS TOUCHED
Latch mode writes automation data to an automation playlist, only begins
writing when a control is ‘touched,’ but ‘latches’ on to the last value entered until playback ceases. DATA IS ONLY OVERWRITTEN IF A CONTROL IS
TOUCHED.

46
Q

How is the Do-To-All Selected function useful? What keyboard modifier set is used to access Do-To-All Selected?

A

Often times you would like to do a particular action to only a select number
of tracks in your session, rather than all of them at once.
Shift+Option/Alt is used.

47
Q

Can you modify or delete the ALL GROUP?

A

You cannot delete
