Sublimation
Consciously putting unacceptable thoughts out of awareness
Suppression
Attempting to erase an unacceptable act, thought, feeling, or desire
Undoing
Attributing unacceptable feelings to someone else
Projection
Keeping unacceptable thoughts from awareness (cannot remember trauma)
Repression
Redirection of feelings to a more acceptable subject
Displacement
Express attitude that is opposite of unconscious wish or fear
Reaction formation
Lithium EXPECTED side effects
Fine hand tremors, polyuria, mild thirst, mild nausea
Lithium patient education
Drink 2,500 to 3,000 mL/day and maintain sodium intake
NOTE: lithium causes loss of water and sodium
Wernicke’s syndrome assessment
Confusion, diplopia, nystagmus, ataxia, apathy
Wernicke’s syndrome interventions
Thiamine (IM or IV), abstinence from alcohol
Korsakoff’s psychosis assessment
Memory disturbances/confabulation, altered taste and smell, loss of reality testing

Balanced diet, thiamine, abstinence from alcohol
