FLIGHT OF IDEAS
Pt will jump from topic to topic with recognisable links (e.g. rhyming, punning, environmental distractions).
Words are innappropriated linked and ends up wandering from original theme.
Pressure of speech is present

Tangential thinking
Wonders between topic but never returns to original theme. There is a connection between topic and tangent (e.g. ask how they got here and tell you about dog they saw on bus)
Circumstantiality
Inability to answer question without giving excessive and unnecessary detail.

Pre-occupation
Pre-occupied with a topic but thoughts aren’t intrusive, fixed or false
Over-Valued idea
unreasonable, sustained belief but is not held with same intensity as delusion
(e..g hypochondriasis)
Obsession
Undesired, unpleasant and intrusive thoughts that cannot be suppressed
DELUSION
Fixed false belief which is inappropriate to the patient’s socio-cultural background.
- Firmly held even when faced with logical, contradictory argument.
- Can be mood congruent or incongruent
ILLUSION
Abnormal perception stimulated by external stimulus
HALLUCINATION
Abnormal perception that occurs in the absence of external stimuli
