Psychopharmacology Flashcards
Different drug groups with example
Antidepressants - TCA’s, SSRI’s, MAOI’s
* Antipsychotics - Typical and Atypical
* Mood stabiliser - Lithium
* Minor tranquilisers - Benzodiazepines
What are tricyclic antidepressants
- inhibits reuptake of noradrenaline into monoaminergic nerve terminals
- increases availability of neurotransmitters in synaptic cleft and facilitates neurotransmission in brain
Side effects of tricyclic antidepressants
- dry mouth
- urinary retention
- constipation
- postural hypotension
what do selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors do
- blockes reuptake of serotonin from synapse into serotonergic nerve terminals
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors side effects
- nausea
- anorexia
- tremor
- insomnia
mechanism of antipsychotic action
- blocks D2 type receptors in mesolimbic area of brain.
mechanism of benzodiazepines
- binds to regulatory site on GABBA and enhance response to inhibitory neurotransmitters
side effects of benzodiazepines
- long lasting hangover effects and physical and psychological dependence
Selective serotonin reuptake examples
fluoxitine (prozac), citalopram
Advantages of Advantages of Selective serotonin reuptake (SSRI)
Lack of anticholinergic and CV effects
Acute toxicity less than MAOIs or TCAs, so less risk of death by overdose
No food reactions
what is benzodiazepine used for
- reduction in anxiety and aggression
- sedation leading to improvement of insomnia and preoperatively
- muscle relaxation (antispasmodics) and loss of coordination
- suppression of convulsions
- useful in alcohol withdrawal
