What is the PCL-R?
A 20-item rating scale that uses interviews and a case-history review to assess: interpersonal, affective and behavioral features of psychopathy
What is the PPI-R and the SRP
- The PPI-R is a 154-tem test measuring 3 sub scales of psychopathy: fearless dominance, self-centered impulsivity and cold heartedness
- SRP is a 64 item measure for pyschopathy looking at 4 scales: erratic lifestyle, callous effect, interpersonal manipulation and criminal tendencies
What are some risk factors for psychopathy ?
- diagnosis of ASPD or CD
- Childhood abuse or neglect
- unstable and violent lifestyle
What is sociopathy?
A person who has psychopathic traits are assumed to be due to environmental factors (is also not a DSM diagnosis)
What are some factors that are measured on the PCL-R ?
- Pathological lying
- Manipulation
- Emotionally shallow
- Parasitic lifestyle
- Poor behavioral control
- Impulsivity
What are some advantages and disadvantages of self-report measures?
Advantages:
- can measure unobservable emotions and attitudes
- easy to administer and score
- some measures cant detect if someone is lying
Disadvantages
- psychopaths often lie and are manipulative
- they may not have enough self awareness of their own emotions
- can be hard to report on emotions if they do not feel them
What is the overlap between ASPD and psychopathy ?
- APD places more emphasis on antisocial behaviors than the psychopathy
- 80% of adult offenders are diagnosed with APD but 10-25% are classified as psychopaths
What are two tests use to identify psychopathy in youth?
- The APSD

What are the 3 dimensions of child psychopathic traits ?
- Grandiose-manipulative (GM)
- Daring-impulsive
- Callous-unemotional (CU)
What is the response modulation deficit?
States that psychopaths fail to use other environmental cues that are present during a dominant response set to modulate their behavior
What was the main conclusion of psychopathy treatment ?
- early studies showed treatment caused higher rates of a recidivism
What are a few approaches to treatment?
CBT, relapse prevention, inpatient treatment, working on communication skills, challenge their cognitive distortions, minimize their denail
