What is stress
Physiological and psychological tension in responce to a Stressor.
What is a Stressor
The stimuli that causes the stress.
Internal stressor
The point of the stress originates from within the individual.
External stressor
The point of the stress originates from outside the individual, from situations and events in environment.
Acute stress
Short term stress that occurs quietly.
Chronic stress
Persistent stress thats long term.
Eustress
Positive psychological responces to sress.
Distress
Negative psychological responces to stress.
Fight
Confronting the threat
Flight
To escape/flee from the threat.
Freeze
Keepig still/silent when approached by threat.
What does the sympathetic control
Sympathetic branch controls arousal fight flight response/ fires us up e.g Adrenaline
Parasympathetic
Calms us down/ keeps us stable
Corisol
A Hormone that is released in times of stress
Cortisol adaptive functions
- Increasing blood sugar. levels.
- Improving metabolism.
- Energising the body.
- Reducing inflammation.
What does GAS stand for
General Adaptive syndrome
What is GAS
the general adaptive syndrome model is a biologial model that tracks physiological stress.
Strengths of GAS
- Recogises the difference between Chronic stress and illness.
- Provides objective information about the biological process involved in the stress responce.
Limitations.
- Only focases on biological aspects of stress
- Fails to recognise the subjective nature of the stress response.
