Cerebrum
The largest and most developed portion if the brain, which is responsible for controlling memory, understanding, and logic
Conscious
Information that we are always aware of; our conscious mind preforms the thinking when taking in new information
Denial
A defense mechanism whereby a persons refuses to recognize or acknowledge something that is painful
Ego
Freud´s term for the rational part of the mind, which operates on the reality principle
Extinction
In operant conditioning, the diminishing of a contraband response due to lack of reinforcement
Id
Freuds term for the instinctual part of the mind, which operates on the pleasure principle
Identity Crisis
A time in a teenagers life filled with extreme self-consciousness as he or she attempts to test and interegate various roles
Neo-freudian
Psychologist who modified freuds psychoanalytic theroy to inculde social and culture aspects
Personality
An individuals characteristics pattern of thinking,feeling, and acting
Self- actualization
reaching ones full potential, occurs only after basic physical and psychological requirements are met
Superego
Freud term for the moral center of the mind
Displacement
The shift of an emotion from its original focus to another object, person, and situtation
Neuroscientist
A scientist who specializes in the study of the human brain
Projection
A defence mechanisim whereby a persons attributes their own threating impulses onto someone else
