Psychology/ structure of the nervous system Flashcards
Neuron structure
Neurons are made up of dendrites, axons, and a cell body
Simple reflex arc
Receptors in the skin detect something (e.g a hot stove) and sensory neurons send a electrical impulse to a relay neuron which is located in the spinal cord
What are the divisions of the nervous system?
The CNS and the peripheral nervous system
What does the CNS contain?
The CNS (central nervous system) contains the brain and spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system contain?
The peripheral nervous system is made up of nerves that branch off from the spinal cord and extend to all parts of the body
Autonomic nervous system
The NS responsible for things you don’t think about e.g. walking, blinking
Somatic nervous system
The NS responsible for things that you consciously sense and do
Sympathetic nervous system
The NS responsible for “fight or flight” responses
Parasympathetic nervous system
The NS that regulates the “rest and digest” functions of the body
