Psychology Paper 1 - Research Methods Flashcards
What are the Ethical Issues?
D- deception
A- anonimity
C- confidentiality
R- right to withdraw
I- informed consent
S- sensitive issues
P- protection from harm
How do we deal with ethical issues?
By debriefing. A debrief should include:
-Purpose of the study
-What the study is about
-What were you had to do
-Participants should be told what their data would be used for
-Thank them for their participation
-Comofort them
-Ask them if they have any questions
What type of Experimental designs are there?
-Independant groups design: two seperate groups, two separate conditions
-Repeated measures design: groups take part in all conditions
-Matched pairs: matching participants on similar characteristics
What is the evalution for Independant groups design?
Weakness:
-Lots of participants and too many participant variables
-Differences act as confounding variables
-Cant control particiapnt variables casues changes in DV.
Strengths:
-No order effects
-Demand characteristics eliminated
Solution:
-Random allocation
What is the evalution for Repeated measues design?
Weakness:
-Order effects
Strengths:
-Eliminates participant variables
-Fewer participants
-Less time consuming
Solution:
-Counterbalancing (when half of ppt do conditions in one order and other half do other order (ABBA)).
What is the evalution for Matched Pairs?
Weakness:
-Time consuming and expensive
-Getting many ppts would be hard
-Difficult to know what variables ppts should be matched on
Strength:
-No order effects
-Low demand characteristics
What are the sampling methods?
-Random sampling (random placement)
-Volunteer sampling (ppt come to you)
-Opportunity sampling (you go to ppt)
-Systematic sampling (every interval)
-Stratified sampling (categories)
Whats the evalution for Random sampling?
Weakness:
-Time consuming
-Have to get a list of everyones name
-Volunteer bias
-Participants can refuse to take part
Strengths:
-No researcher bias
