What is psychology?
The scientific study of mental processes (how we think and feel) and behavioral processes
Why do we need science?
Intuition: Sometimes it’s ok to rely on intuition but it can be misleading
Common sense: One person’s common sense might not be common sense to someone else. It also doesn’t generate any new knowledge.
Overconfidence
Science is necessary for accuracy and knowledge
How do we know what is needed to understand the natural world?
Rationalism: States that pure logic and reasoning is the only way to understand the natural world
Empiricism: States that the best way to understand the world is through observation, experience, and senses
Kant: Use both rationalism and empiricism
What is the scientific method?

What are the 3 types of research methods?
- Descriptive research
- Correlational research
