psychology : evaluation - resistance to social influence Flashcards
what is strength of social support ?
- research support for the positive effect of social support comes from Albrecht et al
what is the research support for social support ?
- 2006 –> evaluated an 8-week programme designed to help pregnant teens to resist peer pressures to smoke and found that
—> when social support was provided by a slightly order buddy
–> tens were significantly less likely to smoke than control group
what does the research support show about social support ?
- can help young people resist social influence as part of an intervention to the real world
what does the research support support further ?
- has important implication on other areas of society
—> stopping pregnant teens engaging in dangerous and damaging behaviour during pregnancy
–> means that likelihood giving birth to a baby with health problems is also reduced
what does the research support support further mean ?
-healthcare providers –> are often already stretched to capacity will not have to expend resources on medical issues that could have been prevented in advance
–> will be able to focus their attention on people that are in need of care for reason that are beyond their control
what is another research support for social support ?
- role that dissenting peers plays in resisting social support comes from gamson et al
what did the findings show from the research support ?
- found higher levels of resistance in their study than milgram
–> probably because they were in groups 88 % rebelled
–> showing that peer support is linked to greater resistance
what is a strength for locus of control ?
- research support for the link between locus of control and resistance to obedience was found by holland 1967
what does holland’s research show?
- repeated milgram’s study and measured whether participants were internals or externals
–> 37 % of internals didn’t continue to the highest whereas only 27 % of externals didn’t continue
what is a limitation of locus of control ?
- rotter suggested that it can generally only explain resistance in novel situations
what did rotter suggest abut people and conformity ?
- when people are in situations where they have conformed or obeyed in the past
–> more likely to repeat this behaviour the next time the situation comes around
what does rotter’s explanation suggest ?
- the LoC many only come into effect when the situation is unknown
–> correct course of action is unclear
–> making the LoC only a limited explanation for resistance
what does it mean overall about LoC ?
- doesn’t mean it’s worthless as an explanation
–> as we have seen that it can explain individual instances of resistance in research
–> means that we have to be open and aware to the influences of other factors alongside of LoC
