Psychology Chapter 2 Flashcards
Describe what a network system is and what it does?
A nervous system is a network of billions of cells that detects what is going on inside or outside the body and guides appropriate responses.
What does a biological psychologist study?
They study physical and chemical changes involved in behavior and mental processes.
What are neurons?
neurons are specialized cells of the nervous system that send and receive messages.
What are the the three main functions of the nervous system?
Three Functions of the Nervous System: The nervous system’s three main functions are to 1) receive information (input),
2)to integrate that information with past experiences (processing), and
3)to guide actions (output).
Example….When the alarm clock goes off, this person’s nervous system, like yours, gets the message, recognizes what it means, and takes action—by getting out of bed or perhaps hitting the snooze button.
What is a glial cell?
glial cells are our nervous system cells that hold neurons together and help them communicate with each other.
What is an axon? What is it’s purpose?
An axon Is part of a Neuron and is A fiber that carries signals away from the cell body.
What is a dendrite and what is it’s purpose?
A dendrites is part of a neuron and are fibers that receive signals from the axons of other neurons.
