what is the role of the amygdala?
flash bulb memory
emotions
Mcgaugh and Cahill
what was the beta blocker for the amygdala called
propranolol
as this made the participants less likely to get an emotional response from the stories so less likely to remember them.
Neurotransmitters theory
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers which allow for communication in the brain. Neurotransmitters are located within vesicles in neurons. They are released from vesicles once the action potential within the axon reaches the terminal button. The action potential stimulates the vesicle to release neurotransmitters into the synaptic gap - they bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. If the neurotransmitters are antagonists they will make the next neuron less likely to fire, if they are agonist they are more likely to fire. One behaviour affected by neurotransmitters is memory in Rogers and Kesners study, we see the effects of blocking the neurotransmitter of acetylcholine. And how that affects spatial memories in the hippocampus.
localisation of function
different parts of the brain are responsible for specific functions
neuroplasticity
the brains ability to to form and reorganise connections within the brain in response to learning or experience.
