psychology #4 Flashcards
EEG
an amplified recording of the waves of electrical activity sweeping across the brains surface.; measured by electrodes placed on the scalp
MEG
a brain imaging technique that measures magnetic fields from the brains natural electrical activity
CT
a series of x-ray photographs taken from different angles and combined by computer into a composite representation of a slice of the brains structure (cat scan)
PET
a visual display of brain activity that detects where a radioactive form of glucose while the brain performs a given task
MRI
a technique that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce computer gernerated images of soft tissue
fMRI
a technique for revealing bloodflow and brain activity by comparing successive MRI scans
Brainstem
the oldest part and central core of the brain, beginging where the spinal chord swells as it enters the skull; resposible for sutomatic survival functions
Medulla
base of the brainstem; contols heartbeat and breathing
Thalamus
located on the top of the brainstem; directs messages to the sensory recieving areas in the corex and transits replies to the cerebellum
Reticular formation
nerve network that travels through the brainstem into the thalamus; causes arousal
Cerebellum
the “little brain” at the rear of the brainstem; processes sensory input, coordinates movement outputand balance, enables nonverbal learning and memory
