what is depression?
Depression is a consistent low mood with feelings of sadness, irritability and emptiness that last for two of more weeks.
Describe Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors in terms of treatments for depression.
serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood in the brain.
SSRIs block the absorption or re-uptake of serotonin so more stays within the synapse and improves mood.
What are two other treatments for depression (other than SSRI)
Cognitive behavioural therapy - CBT - teaches patients to identify negative thinking patterns, to challenge them and then to replace them with positive ones.
Exercise releases endorphins, hormones that reduce pain and increase feelings of pleasure.
What is an anxiety disorder?
An anxiety disorder is when the body activates the flight or fight response when it is not needed due to the threat being psychological not physical.
Anxiety attacks are intense and cause excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. They cause fast heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating and exhaustion.
what is a phobia?
A phobia is an irrational fear that impacts a persons ability to live a normal life. Fears become irrational when the risk of the subject of fear is low or non-existent. the threat is in the mind. phobias can be treated slowly through exposure therapy and similar practices.
what is post traumatic stress disorder?
PTSD is an anxiety disorder where the anxiety is experienced as a result of trauma experienced int he past.
PTSD is often experienced in soldiers, victims of assault, people who have had near-death experiences or have been subject to long terms mental and emotional abuse.
what are symptoms of PTSD?
Symptoms include intrusive and unwanted memories, avoidance of conversations about the event, trouble sleeping, heightened arousal and loss of interest in once enjoyed activities.
what are protective factors?
protective factors are behaviours and strategies that are put into place to reduce the chance of suffering from depression and anxiety.
Explain protective factors in terms of biological, psychological and social factors.
Biological protective factors include having good physical health and effective relaxation methods.
Psychological protective factors include a high academic achievement, high self esteem and good problem solving skills.
Social protective factors include having strong friendships and family relationships and a positive employment.
what is schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a mental health issue in which people interpret reality abnormally. it causes hallucinations in which the person can hear, see and/or feel things which aren’t actually real.

Personal growth - feeling of continued development.
Self acceptance - acknowledges and accepts ones aspects of self, good and bad.
Autonomy - self determination and independence
Environmental mastery - sense of mastery and competence in managing environment
Positive relationships - warm satisfying and trusting relationships with others.
Purpose in life - has goals and a sense of direction in life.
