How will an individual feel when ‘flourishing’?
The individual will experience positive emotions, will have stable emotions, be resilient and have high levels of self-esteem.
What is the PERMA Theory
PERMA theory is an attempt to understand what human flourishing is and what enables it to exist/happen
Define what each element of the PERMA theory is
o Positive Emotion – Increase positive emotion in your life.
o Engagement – be fully engaged and immersed in the activities and tasks that fill our lives.
o Relationships – Authentic relationships with friends, family and loved ones.
o Meaning – Contributing to the community is a way to create meaning in life.
o Accomplishment – Includes how much we challenge ourselves and continue to develop our strengths and skills, practically and emotionally.
What is the character strengths and virtues theory test?
Character is how an individual conducts themselves in society.
This theory is the ‘backbone’ of Positive Psychology.
What is the participant of the character strengths and virtues test encouraged to do?
The participant is encouraged to increase the prevalence or engage in activities which allow them to align to these strengths and virtues.
How many character strengths are there? What are they organised into?
There are 24 different strengths which are organised into virtues.
Define the biopsychosocial model

There are multiple factors which influence the mental health and wellbeing of an individual.
Define the 3 elements of the BioPsychoSocial Model
BIO: Biological Level
This includes hormones, neurotransmitters, brain structures, genetic inheritance and how these factors influence how an individual behaves.
PSYCH: Psychological Level
This includes factors such as behaviour, personality, attitudes/beliefs, learning and memory, self-esteem and emotions.
SOCIAL: Social Level
This examines how culture and other people influence and shape behaviour.
Define two examples of Positive Psychology Interventions
Mindfulness:
Is paying attention to one’s own ongoing experience in a way that allows openness and flexibility.
Being fully present and aware during our daily activities.
Mindfulness allows you to become open to new experiences and points of view.
Meditation:
• Modify mental activity and reduce arousal.
• Elimination of thought activity – create a form of ‘mental silence’.
• When the mind is controlled, you are able to achieve concentration.
