Psychological Treatments For Schizophrenia Flashcards
what psychological therapies are there?
- CBT (CSE)
- family therapy
- token economy
cognitive behavioural therapy ( CBT) ( CSE) KW
a method of treating mental disorders based on both cognitive and behavioural techniques. cognitive deals with challenging negative thoughts. coping strategy enhancement is a form of CBT specific for schizophrenic patients.
how does CBT (+CSE) work?
- psychologists builds a rapport with patient to identify irrational thoughts and triggers for psychotic symptoms
- CSE looks at building on strategies the patients already use
- then gets patients to identify own triggers
- then aims to find 2 strategies ( cognitive or behavioural) for each symptom
- gives patient homework to consolidate what they learned
what effects does CBT have on schizophrenic symptoms?
- helps them make sense of delusions and hallucinations and how they impact feelings and behaviour
- teach them it’s suppressed feelings and shouldn’t be scared of them = reduces anxiety
- teach them delusions and beliefs are not based on reality
evidence to support CBT
CHADWICK
- worked with schizophrenic who had delusions his thinking could influence the future
- asked him to predict what would happen in 50 clips
- he was unable to do this
- taught him delusions weren’t based on reality
family therapy KW
a psychological therapy carried out with all or some members of a family with the aim of improving their communication and reducing the stress of living as a family ( EE)
what happens in family therapy?
- therapist takes with family to identify the problems
- doesn’t usually involve the patient
- use a range of strategies to reduce stress in a house hold
PHAROAH ET AL - form therapeutic alliances with family members
- reduce stress of caring for someone with SCHIZ
- reduce amber and guilt
- help achieve balance beers caring and maintaining
what effect does this have on schizophrenic symptoms?
- reduces levels of stress and high EE
- increases there motivation ( avolition) makes them more likely to take medication
- reduces likelihood of relapses
WONT DIRECTLY INFLUENCE SYMPTOMS AS THERAPY IS ON THE FAMILY RATHER THAN PATIENT
token economy KW
a form of behavioural therapy where desirable behaviour are encouraged by the use of selective reinforcement. patients get given tokens for correct behaviour which can be exchanged for primary reinforcers
how does token economy work?
- use of operant conditioning
- psychologists use positive reinforcement to give patients tokens for right behaviour
- tokens can be exchanged for primary reinforcers ( rewards such as walks, material or food)
- tokens act as secondary reinforcers as they gain value once patient has learned they can be used to obtain rewards
what effects does token economies have on schizophrenic symptoms?
- challenges the behaviour, especially patterns of maladaptive behaviour from long periods in hospitals such as bad hygiene
- helps them function normally so are socially acceptable
