Ego Syntonic
Has a positive relationship with the disorder. Less likely to seek treatment.
Ego Dystonic
Has a negative relationship with the disorder. More likely to seek treatment.
External Barriers
It is time consuming and costly to receive treatment for mental disorders.
Internal Barriers
Two main types: Ego Syntonic and Ego Dystonic. The types are not inherent to specific disorders.
Stages of Change: #1
Pre-contemplation. Characterized by inability or unwillingness to acknowledge the existence of a problem.
Stages of Change: #2
Contemplation. Acknowledges the existence of a problem. Unsure or unwilling to change.
Stages of Change: #3
Preparation. Recognize the problem and prepare for change.
Stages of Change: #4
Action. Involves taking active steps to changing the behaviour.
Stages of Change: #5
Maintenance. Individuals continue the healthy habits formed at the action stage.
Stressors
Can trigger re-emergence of unhealthy behaviours.
Relapse
The return of old unhealthy behaviours leading the individual back to the pre-contemplation stage.
Clinical Psychologist
Individual who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology. Not a medical doctor.
Therapist
An unregulated profession. Title can be used by anyone.
Psychiatrist
Specialized medical doctors that are qualified to prescribe medication.
Efficacy Studies
A study done under ideal circumstances with highly selected and homogenous populations.
