Flooding
the condition of becoming filled or covered with a large amount of water
Psychoanalysis
examine a person’s unconscious mind to discover the hidden causes of their mental problems
Lobotomy
a medical operation in which cuts are made in or near the front part of the brain, used in the past for the treatment of severe mental problems
ECT
ElectroConvulsive Therapy: a treatment for particular mental illnesses that involves sending an electric current through the brain
CBT
cognitive behavioural therapy: a treatment that helps people to deal with problems by changing the way they think about them
Cognition
the use of conscious mental processes
Experimental psychology
the branch of psychology concerned with the scientific investigation of the responses of individuals to stimuli in controlled situations.
Informed consent
permission granted in full knowledge of the possible consequences, typically that which is given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with knowledge of the possible risks and benefits.
Conflict
an active disagreement, as between opposing opinions or needs
Sublimation
the act of expressing strong emotions or using energy by doing an activity or creating something
Alternative therapy
range of treatments for medical conditions that people use instead of or with western medicine (conditional medicine) : such as acupuncture, homeopathy, and hypnotherapy.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
emotional quotient: a measurement of a person’s emotional intelligence (= their ability to understand their own feelings and the feelings of others):
Framing/ Frame/ Reframe
Framing : process people use to define a situation and decide how they are going to deal with it.
Reframing is doing this over again in a different way: (– for example, (or “win-win”) way, rather than a negative (or “win-lose”) way.)
