Psychological explanation Flashcards
What are the three Psychological explanations
Double-bind theory
Schizophrenogenic mother
Expressed emotions
Double-bind theory- researcher
Bateson et al
suggest that children who frequently receive contradictory messages from their parents are more likely to develop schizophrenia, because this prevents them from developing an internally coherent construction of reality.
Double-bind theory- Example
if a mother tells her son that she loves him, yet at the same time turns her head away in disgust, the child receives two conflicting messages about their relationship on different communicative levels, one of affection on the verbal level and one of animosity on the non-verbal level (one invalidates the other).
What did Bateson suggest
did not suggest that double bind communication caused schizophrenia on its own, but it may be a contributing factor.
Schizophrenogenic mother researcher
Proposed by Fromm-Reichmann, who noted that many of her patients with schizophrenia described a particular type of parent, which she termed ‘schizophrenogenic’.
Schizophrenogenic mother - reason
This means that the family climate is tense and lacking honesty, which leads to the development of paranoia and anxiety. These feelings manifest themselves in the (positive) schizophrenic symptom of paranoid delusions
What is Expressed emotions
family communication style that involves criticism, hostility and emotional over-involvement.
Expressed emotions- researcher
The researchers concluded that this is more important in maintaining schizophrenia than in causing it in the first place, (Brown et al 1958).
What was the issue with Expressed emotions on schizophrenic patients
Schizophrenics returning to such a family were more likely to relapse into the disorder than those returning to a family low in EE. The rate of relapse was particularly high if returning to a high EE family was coupled with no medication.
