What is an evenly hovering attention?
The counselor provides neutral objectivity to allow the client to project fantasies about the counselor. The counselor practices empathy and warmth in a hovering manner
How can you word through transference with the client?
- Observe how unconscious and unfulfilled needs are played out in sessions
- Notice how the client idealizes you as a need for more constructive “parenting”
- Use positive transference as leverage without bringing the client’s attention to it
- After a solid relationship is built, you can bring the client’s attention to transference and its meaning
What are the signs that countertransference may be happening?
- Impaired empathy
- Inaccurate interpretation of client’s feeling
- Feeling of being blocked and frustrated for a particular client
- Evidence of boredom or impatience.
- Unusual memory lapse regarding a client
- Mutual acting out of client’s pathology and counselor attributes
- Tendency to speak about the client in derogatory terms
- An awareness that you are working harder than the client
