Order of stages
Oral Anal Phallic Latent Genital
Oral stage
0-18months
Satisfaction derived from mouth
Fixation: weaning too early/ too late, erratic feeding patterns
Personalities of oral
Receptive: not breast fed enough, trusting and dependent
Aggressive: breast fed too much, dominating
Orally fixated: gratification through smoking, thumb sucking, pencil chewing
Anal stage
18-36months
Pleasure derived from anus
Fixation: potty training, pleasure from expelling/ withholding faeces
Personalities of anal
Retentive: orderly, rigid, possessive, strict potty training
Expulsive: generous, creative, productive, laid back potty training
Phallic stage
3-6years
Genital focus and opposite gender parent- resolved through ID
Oedipus/ Electra complex
Phallic personalities
Phallic personality type: self assured, vain, impulsive
Conflicts said to result in homosexuality, authority problems and rejection of appropriate gender roles
Genital stage
Puberty (12+)
Satisfaction derived from genitals and basis for mature and adult expressions of love
Frustrations
Occurs if needs aren’t met- child may also be over indulged (eg excessive satisfaction if infant nurses often)
Frustration and over indulgence: fixation- some of the child’s libido remains locked in stage
