Differentiate between conscious, preconscious and unconscious
Conscious - within our awareness
Preconscious - memories
Unconscious - memories that cannot be retrieved
The conscious mind is driven by the unconscious
Differentiate between superego, ego and ID
Superego - moral part of mind, set of rules and principles, no concept of time, can’t negotiate (intolerable self criticism)
Ego - mature, rational part of mind that negotiates, understands that there are others who have needs (euphoric self satisfaction)
ID - primitive, selfish part of mind concerned about your own needs (basic needs with instant gratification), entirely unconscious, no concept of time or logic, no concept that others exist and have needs (sex and aggression)

Define the defence mechanism terms ‘projection’, ‘sublimation’, ‘reaction formation’, ‘splitting’, ‘suppression’, ‘acting out’, ‘introjection’
Projection - projecting the conflict outside of self
Sublimation - attaining the gratification in an acceptable way
Reaction formation - doing the opposite of the initial desire
Splitting - separating the conflict as ‘all good’ or ‘all bad’
