Explain the 4 defining principles (key assumptions) of the psychodynamic perspective
A
- Behaviour is a result of conflict between different parts of the mind (Id, Ego, SuperEgo)
2.Important influences on behaviour come from a part of the mind that you have no direct awareness of the unconscious.
- Personality is shaped by relationships experience and conflict over time (especially during childhood). These can have a determinant influence on your future mental health.
- Our childhood significantly impact our behaviour as adults. Individuals have very little freewill to make choices in life; instead behaviour is determined by unconscious motives and childhood experiences.

Consists of all the inherited components of personality present at birth. (Sex [Life], instinct, aggressive instinct [Death])

- Seeks pleasure & avoids pain
- If ego fails it can cause anxiety and defence mechanisms
Develops around the age of 2 years old

Consists of two systems:
The conscience = Can punish ego through causing feeling of guilt
The ideal self = Imaginary picture of who you ought to be
Develops around ages 3-5 years old
