psychodynamic explanations
- a group of theories influenced by the work of Freud -> share the belief that unconscious conflicts, rooted in childhood and derive future criminal behaviour
3 compotents of Freuds theory

SUPEREGO

part of the unconscious that contains all the urges and impulses
EGO
between the ID and the external world
SUPEREGO
formed at end of phallic stage
works on the morality principle
exerts its influence by punishing the ego through guilt for wrongdoing, rewards with pride for good moral behaviour
weak superego
if same gender parent is absent during the phallic stage
child cant internalise a fully formed superego as there is no opporutinity for identification
deviant superego
if the superego that a child internalises has immoral or deviant values, this would lead to offending behaviour
overharsh superego
overharsh parenting style leads to a child with crippled guilt and anxiety
overwhelming need for punishment
bowlby 44 theives
none of controls had early seperations
39% experienced seperation
those with an affectionless character had almost all experienced frequent seperation 86% of thieves compared with 17%
