- NHS recommends breastfeeding to protect infants from disease
- also builds strong emotional bond and aids development
- Father has limited role

- infants associate mum with pleasure (food) but food doesnt = love
- Harlow - direct contact, comfort and time creates emotional bond
- Schaffer and emerson - infants form attachment with those who interacted with them the most

- Freud - mother infant dyad is important during oral stage to satisfy libido
- Freud - anxiety caused by infant realising their needs are unsatisfied if separated
- relationship with mum is prototype of all future ones
