What is this perspective?
This perspective describes the different forces,most of which are unconscious,that operate the mind and direct human behaviour
what are the three levels of consciousness?
1) conscious
2) precocious
3) unconscious
what takes place during the conscious mind?
This the part of the brain that we are aware of (everyday thoughts)
what takes place during the preconscious mind?
Thoughts and memories that can be readily brought into conscious
what takes place during the unconscious mind?
This information isn’t directly accessible to awareness
-Frued described it as a ‘dumping box’ for urges,feelings and ideas that are tied to anxiety,conflict and pain
What is the tripartite?
Freud believed that the personality is made up of three parts
1) The ID
2) The ego
3) Supergo
Whats involved in the ID?
This is present at brith,new born baby is selfish
PLEASURE PRINCIPLE
Whats involved in the EGO?
Develops by the age of three,child becomes aware that other people have feelings
REALITY PRINCIPLE
Whats involved in the SUPEREGO?
This appears around the age of 5 and child has sense of morality
MORALITY PRINCIPLE
What are ego defence mechanisms?
Freud stated that the ego employs a range of defence mechanisms that operate at an unconscious level
-these help ward off unpleasant feelings such as anxiety
What are the three main defence mechanisms?
1) Denial
2) Displacement
3) Repression
What are the 5 Psychological stages?
1) The oral stage
2) The anal stage
3) The phallic stage
4) The latency stage
5) The genital stage
