What do defence mechanisms do?
They distort reality unconsciously trying to decrease conscious stress
What is the conscious?
Thoughts and feelings
What is the preconscious?
memories and stored knowledge
what is the unconscious?
fears, traumas irrational wishes etc.
What is the superego?
societal rules and morals
what is dynamic equilibrium?
The idea that the Id, superego and ego should be balanced
Name four defence mechanisms:
Denial
Repression
Projection
Displacement
What is denial?
refusal to perceive painful facts, thought or feelings as existing
What is repression?
blocking unpleasant emotions, impulses, thoughts or memories out of the conscious mind
What is displacement?
satisfying an impulse with a substitute person/object
what is projection?
accusing others of something you insecure about within yourself
Name the five psychosexual stages in order
- oral (0–1yr)
- anal (1–3yrs)
- phallic (3–5yrs)
- latency (6–12yrs)
- genital (12yrs/puberty-adulthood)
Describe the Oral stage
Oral (0–1yr) – focus of pleasure is the mouth and the mother’s breast is the focus of desire
Describe the Anal stage
Anal (1–3yrs) – focus of pleasure is the anus and child focuses on withholding and expelling faeces
Describe the Phallic stage
Phallic (3–5yrs) – focus of pleasure is genitals and children experience the Oedipus/Electra complex
