What do psychodynamic psychologists believe about the unconscious mind?
Controls our everyday activities and is inaccessible
What three sections did Freud divide the mind into?
Id, ego and superego
Id
Operates according to the pleasure principle and demands immediate gratification regardless of the circumstances
Ego
Acts as a half way point, mediating the impulsive demands of the id and the reality of the real world
Superego
Determines which behaviour are permissible and causes feelings of guilt when rules are broken
What are the pyschosexual stages?
Oral, anal, phalic, latent and genital
When is the oral stage?
0 - 2 years
When is the anal stage?
2 -3 years
When is the phalic stage?
3 - 6 years
When is the latent stage?
6 - 12 years
When is the genital stage?
12+
Description of oral stage
Mouth is the focal point of sensation and is the way in which the child expresses early sexual energy eg. through sucking and biting
Description of anal stage
Beginnings of ego development. Focus on anal pleasure, completed when child is potty trained
Description of phalic stage
Oedopus and Electra concept - boys experience castration anxiety, girls experience penis envy
Description of latent stage
Child develops mastery of the world around them. Conflict and issues of the earlier stages are repressed
