psychoanalytic Flashcards
ego defense mechanisms
repression, denial, reaction formation, projection, displacement, rationalization, sublimation, regression, introjection, identification, compensation
therapeutic process
making the unconscious conscious, strengthen the ego, achieve insight
techniques
blank screen approach, free association, working-through, dream analysis
blank screen approach
avoid self disclosure and remain neutral to foster a transference relationship, in which their clients will make projections on to them
free association
say what ever comes to mind without self censorship
working-through process
repetitive and elaborate explorations of unconscious material and defenses, most of which originated in early childhood
psychoanalytic view of human nature
behavior is determined by irrational forces, unconscious motivations, and biological drives, as these evolve through the psychosexual stages in the first 6 years
id
untamed drives and impulses, functions to discharge tension, illogical to satisfy instincts
ego
attempts to organize and mediate between the id and superego, controls the id
super ego
internalized social component, moral code, concern about whether an action is good or not, represents the ideal rather than the real
repression
threatening or painful thoughts and feelings are excluded from awareness, removing from the conscious
displacement
directing energy toward another person when the original person is inaccessible, take anger out on one person even if they did not cause the anger
compensation
masking perceived weakness or developing positive traits to make up for limitations
