Define Hallucination
A sensory perception not accompanied by an external stimulus
Define Illusion
A misperception of an actual stimulus
Define Delusions
A fixed false personal belief based on faulty conclusions related to external reality, which is tenaciously maintained regardless of what others believe or compelling evidence suggests
what is the difference between mood-congruent and mood-incongruent
Mood-congruent: The contents of the delusions/hallucinations etc. are within keeping with the patients mood. e.g. suicidal auditory hallucinations with a depressed mood
Mood-incongruent: The contents of the delusions/hallucinations etc. are NOT within keeping with the patients mood. e.g. suicidal auditory hallucinations with a manic mood
Define Affect
A subjective feeling of emotional experience manifested by observable behaviors such as attitude, facial expression and tone of voice
Define Mood
A pervasive and sustained emotion
Define Thought Disorder
Disturbance in the formation of thoughts, characterized by loosened associations, incoherent speech, neologisms, perseveration, blocking, clang associations and echolalia
Define Circumstantiality
Speech that is circuitous and delayed in reaching its logical conclusion because of the inclusion of unnecessary, long-winded details
What is the difference between Echolalia and Palilalia
Echolalia: Repetition of words or expression of other people. it is typically repetitive like and echo
Palilalia: A meaningless repetition of a person’s own word/s
Define Loose Associations
Thinking manifested by utterances of ideas that shift from one topic to another, the topics bearing little relevance to one another.
Define Neoligism
New words invented by the patient, distortion of words with a new or highly idiosyncratic meaning for the patient
Define Perseveration
Persistent repetition of words, ideas, or topics throughout a conversation
Define Blocking
Interrupted speech before a thought or idea has been completed. i.e. and interruption in the train of thought
Define Clang Associations
Speech in sounds, rather than logical conceptual relationships determine the choice of words. i.e. Rhyming and punning
