What can be done under the mental health act (Scotland) 2003?
Emergency detention - 72 hours
Short term detention - 28 days
Compulsory treatment order - 6 months
Removal to a place of safety - police
Detention for assessment by a doctor - 2 hours
When can the mental health act be applied?
The person must have a mental disorder
When medical tx is available which could stop their condition getting worse, or help treat their symptoms
If the treatment isn’t provided, there would be significant risk to the person or others
Because of their disorders, their ability to make decisions on treatment is impaired
The use of compulsory powers is necessary
What is the difference between neuroses and psychoses?
Neuroses is contact retained with reality
Psychosis is contact lost with reality
Which psychiatric conditions are commonly seen in dentistry?
Neuroses - anxiety and phobias
Eating disorders

Give examples of neuroses?
Anxiety
Phobias
Obsessional
Hypochondriacal
Depression
What are the different anxiety disorders?
Generalised anxiety disorder - anxiety in many/all situations
Phobic anxiety - intense in specific situations
Panic disorder - unpredictable and extreme
What are somatoform disorders?
Repeated presentation of physical symptoms and persistent requests for medical investigations, in spite of negative findings and reassurance that the symptoms have no physical basis
What are management strategies for anxiety?
Psychological treatment - cognitive behavioural therapy
Drug treatment - self medication and prescribed medication
Give examples of anxiolytic drugs?
Alcohol
Benzodiazepines - diazepam, midazolam
Antidepressants with anxiolytic features - tricyclic
What is a phobia?
Fear out of proportion to the threat
What is the difference between perfectionalism and OCD?
Perfectionism is a personality trait and not out of anxiety avoidance
OCD is a mental health disorder involving repeated, unwanted thoughts or urges that cause anxiety
What are adjustment disorders?
Maladaptive responses to severe past or continuing stress/trauma eg - bereavement, separation, loss
