Mental Health Act (1983)
Sections Healthcare professionals can apply
Section 2 - Admission for assessment. Up to 28 days, can’t be renewed. Signed by two doctors or one doctor/one Approved Mental Health Professional. Can give treatment.
Section 3 - Admission for treatment. 6 months, can be renewed. Signed by two doctors and one Approved Mental Health Professional. Can give treatment, perform investigations,etc.
Section 4 - Emergency order . One doctor and one AMHP. Used in emergency when you are unsafe to go home but there is only one person around. Only used in an “urgent necessity” when waiting for a second doctor would lead to “undesirable delay” (and can therefore do a section 2 or 3). 72hours max. Can’t treat, can literally just keep you there .
Section 5 - Nurse’s/Doctor’s holding power. Similar to a section 4 but for when a patient is already in hospital. Can be done by a doctor 5(2) (72hrs), or a nurse 5(4) (6hrs).
What is needed for capacity to be present?
- Able to understand info
- Able to retain info
- Able to process/ weigh information and come to a decision
- Able to communicate that decision
Police Sections
Section 135 – needs court order to access patient’s home
Section 136 – person suspected of having mental disorder in a public place
Power to move them to a place of safety - local psychiatric unit or police cell
Further assessment - ??? Need Section 2 or 3
Difference between mania and hypomania?
Both trends relate to abnormally elevated mood or inability.
Mania- 7 days or more, psychotic symptoms present.
Hypomania- 4 days or more, no psychotic symptoms
Antidepressant for bi polar?
Fluoxetine
Drug treatment for alcohol withdrawal?
Chlordiaxepoxide (a benzodiazepam)
Bipolar I vs Bipolar II?
Bipolar I - both mania and depression
Bipolar II - more episodes of depression, only mild hypomania
