Psychdynamics Flashcards
Describe immature defences and list some examples
Involved in resistance to change
Difficult to work with
Likely to cross over into therapy
EXAMPLES
Denial - denying something is happening
Splitting - all good or all bad
Projection - projecting unwanted emotions, thoughts and feelings onto another
Passive agression - passive hostility, avoidance of direct communication.
Describe mature defences and list some examples
Mature defences can tolerate greater ambiguity, and anxiety, project sense of self.
EXAMPLES
Sublimation: replacing the undesired feeling with something else eg going for a run
Altruisum: replacing the undesired feeling with helping others.
Anticipation: expect the worst as a protection against it
Humour: creates distance between you and the feeling etc
Describe the three areas of the mind’s topography
CONSCIOUS
immediate awareness like voice, car sounds, etc
PRECONSIOUS
accessible to the conscious readily. eg what did you have for breakfast
UNCONSIOUS
all aspects of personality of which we are unaware
prices, desires, unconscious biases
Describe compromise formations
Patterns of behaviour and thinking and feeling resulting from a compromise between the demands of the ID, EGO and SUPEREGO.
Behavioural patterns a person employs undress conditions of internal and external conflict. They can be adaptive or maladaptive.
External stimuli and internal states are navigated by ego, superego and id and ideal self, which creates conflict that is managed by defences, resulting in compromise formations.
Examples include perfectionism, dominance
Describe the ID, the EGO and the SUPEREGO
ID - child
unrestrained primitive instincts and drives
doesnt know right from wrong
high anxiety
EGO - adult
Develops between interplay of reality, id and superego
Reality principle
THE SUPEREGO
Conscience
observer, judge
reinforce ego with guilt punishments and rewards
