What is transference?
An unconscious response of patients in which they experience feelings and attitudes toward the nurse that were originally associated with significant figures in their lives- may be positive or negative
What is counter transference ?
An emotional response of the nurse that is generated by the patient’s qualities that stimulate emotions based on their own personal experience that results in behavior based that is not appropriate to the therapeutic relationship

Erikson’s Psychosocial stages
Stage 1 - trust vs. mistrust (birth to 2 years old)

Stage 4 - industry vs. inferiority (5-12 years old)
Stage 5 - identity vs. role confusion (13-19 years old)

Defense Mechanisms (Unconscious)
Denial/Minimization
avoidance of difficult realities by ignoring or refusing to recognize them, or minimizing the impact or effect something will have on their life
Defense Mechanisms (Unconscious) : Projection
attributing one’s own thoughts or impulses to another person
Defense Mechanisms (Unconscious): Acting out
feelings, emotions and conflicts are expressed behaviorally, rather than through language

excessive reasoning or logic used to avoid painful emotions

Rationalization
offering a socially acceptable or apparently logical explanation to justify or make acceptable otherwise unacceptable impulses, feelings, behaviors and motives
Maryland legal statutes:
Voluntary psychiatric hospitalization
- a person has recognized the need for treatment and signs themselves into the hospital- must give 72 hrs notice of intent to leave the hospital
Involuntary psychiatric hospitalization
- 2 physicians determine that a person has met the criteria and can be hospitalized without their consent
Emergency Petition for Psychiatric Evaluation (EP)
a person can be taken to the ED for emergency evaluation (see NAMI doc)
Police or paramedics can take a person against their will to a hospital to be evaluated. It does not mean to the individual will stay or be admitted
A patient can involuntarily receive medications
if it is determined by 2 psychiatrists that the patient is in danger if not. This would be done by injection
