General Anxiety Disorder

Chronic, Insidious constant state of worry
about most things most days for >6m, with >3 somatic sx
- Psychotherapy is better than medications
-> SSRIs
What are somatic sx of anxiety
sleep, weight affected, irritability and decreased concentration
Can you prescribe benzodiazepines for GAD?
No, because they are likely to become addicted
Panic Disorder

Acute, overt, ±agoraphobia
STUDENTS PANIC = Sob, Trembling, Unsteady, Depersonalize, Excessive HR, Numbness, Tingling, Sweating
Palpitation, Abd Pain, Nausea, Intense Fear, Chest Pain
Dx: Rule out MI, Hyperthyroidism, asthma
Tx: Medications>Psychotherapy (CBT)
- Benzodiazepines for attacks
- SSRIs more for longterm therapy
