What are peers?
Peers are your friends and other people your age.
What happens in communities?
Young people join gangs as a result of peer pressure.
What do gangs do?
They threaten young people and their families so it often seems impossible NOT to join the gang.
What is very hard to resist?
Peer pressure.
What is easier to do?
It is easier to do what your friends say.
What did you know in your heart during negative peer pressure?
That you know that it is the wrong thing to do.
What is peer pressure?
Peer pressure is the influence we feel from friends, classmates or other people in our social circle to act a certain way or do certain things we may not have considered doing otherwise.
What is a peer group?
Peer groups are usually cliques of friends who are about the same age, similar status and shared interests. They offer us the opportunity to develop various social skills, such as leadership, teamwork and empathy.
What is negative peer pressure?
Negative peer pressure is when you feel pushed by friends to do or go along with something you don’t like - it makes you feel uncomfortable or not safe. It may lead to risky behaviours.
Give 3 examples of negative peer pressure.
- Adopt a negative attitude
- Lie, cheat/be deceitful
- Change the way they dress/act
What is positive peer pressure?
Positive peer pressure could be called peer support. This means that you and your friends can support and help each other.
Give 3 examples of positive peer pressure.
- Communicate well with others
- Resolve fights and other conflicts
- Make new friends
